Root canal treatment is a dental treatment procedure done for the sole purpose of trying to keep your tooth without replacing it prematurely. Our friendly dentists will be able to talk to you about it if you are in a situation that may require the tooth needing more extensive treatment in order to avoid losing the tooth.
The general anatomy of a dental tooth is basically this. A tooth is a bunch of very hard minerals formed in the shape of many different types of 'teeth'. At the core of this mineral, is an empty space, which we call the 'pulp chamber' and 'root canal'. This space is occupied by your blood vessels and nerve supply to constantly supply the tooth.
Unfortunately, when the tooth is suffering from an 'illness', whether it is in the form of dental decay and caries, trauma, or a crack, the nerve responds, trying to protect the tooth. However, in most cases, the nerve will not be able to fix the problem on their own. Hopefully, we were able to get on top of the dental decay or crack early enough so it does not cause a problem. But, sometimes, it is unavoidable, and the situation arises where the nerve is too damaged, that it ends up in the process of slowly 'dying'.
Note that it is only the nerve that dies - the tooth, that is, the minerals, are still there, still functioning as a tooth should - for looks and for eating with.
Root canal treatment is a very safe procedure where we remove the 'dead' nerve that is most likely filled with bacteria and other things that are causing an infection. Once root canal treatment is completed, we would be able to place a dental crown on it (if necessary), and it would be as though nothing has ever happened, and you get to keep your tooth and carry on as normal!
Our dentists would be able to talk to you about the procedure, any risks or complications that the procedure may have for you, and whether it is the right procedure for your situation.
