A dental bridge replaces missing teeth with false teeth that are fixed in place. The teeth on either side of the gap are prepped for crowns and the bridge is then glued on to the prepared teeth.
Bridges are typically crafted from materials such as porcelain or metals like zirconia or gold alloy, Implant-supported bridges are also an option for certain cases.
Dental bridges are a fantastic option for replacing missing teeth, especially in areas where bone loss is present meaning dental implants cannot be placed. However, if adjacent teeth have had no previous dental work on them (e.g. fillings), we generally recommend exploring other tooth replacement options as we try and avoid doing crown prep on perfectly healthy teeth. However, if the adjacent teeth have had large fillings or other work done such as root canal treatment bridges can be a great option to not only replace the missing tooth but also strengthen surrounding teeth, minimising risk of losing more teeth.

Most patients are suitable for dental bridges, however, there are many factors that are taken into account when considering your elibility.
In order to provide you with a lasting dental bridge, there needs to be adjacent teeth close enough to the tooth replacement site. For example, a front tooth should not be replaced with a bridge connected a back molar as this may compromise the bridge's structural integrity.
Implants are the best long-term option compared to a bridge, though they can be more expensive and costs vary. Dentures are a more affordable choice for replacing missing teeth, and partial dentures work well for one or multiple missing teeth. However, it can take time to get used to dentures, which means some people might not wear them consistently.
Dental bridges take at least two appointments to complete, one appointment to prep and scan the teeth and another to remove the temporary crowns and insert the final dental bridge. The timeframe between these appointments is generally 2-3 weeks for the bridge to be manufactured by a lab using your 3D mouth scans.
Bridges allow for a small gap between the crown and the gum, wihtout proper care and maintenance the gums in this area can become inflammed and even develop gum disease.
To maintain gum health around a dental bridge it is important to brush your teeth regularly and floss daily. This can be done using super floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser to clean underneath the bridge.
